Forest fires are increasing in frequency and intensity across Germany and around the world.
Despite the initial damage, exposed mineral soil presents a unique opportunity for ecological redesign of the stand.
Without active intervention, undesirable species or rank grass growth can prevent resilient reforestation. On top of that, the new post-forest-fire vegetation often reignites in subsequent years.
Act early: actively design your target stand, incorporating fire-reducing species and strategic firebreaks.
In January 2023, various species were planted on a small forest fire area.

Soil type: Podzol, sandstone

Old-growth canopy: GKi100 (common pine)

Species planted: Sand birch, mountain ash, broom and wood willow
After two years, a dense young forest developed. It has a large number of seedlings per square metre and now provides shade and protection.
Sand birch: 4/m2
Rowan: 1/m2
Wood willow: 6-8/m2
Broom: 3-4/m2
